Designing content on benefits for Parkinson’s UK

In 2025, amidst worrying proposed government cuts to welfare benefits for disabled people, I worked with Parkinson's UK to make their digital and print content about this complex topic as clear, easy to navigate and reassuring as possible.

I began by analysing what was and wasn’t working with current content by looking at data, and hearing from key staff and people with Parkinson’s. I produced a detailed strategy for the content based on this evidence.

This included creating a new structure for Parkinson’s UK’s online benefits content, making the information much easier to navigate. I then produced new, simplified, easier-to-follow pages on individual benefits, plus a landing page where people affected by Parkinson’s could instantly find what they needed. I wrote or edited all the content, working closely with a benefits expert to ensure accuracy, and built new pages in the Drupal CMS.

I also revamped 11 print booklets on individual benefits to make them as easy to understand, simple to follow and empathetic as possible.

The end result was a set of information that gave tens of thousands of people the knowledge and reassurance they needed to feel in control during an anxious time.

In 2026, I updated the content following further changes to benefits rules, alongside using data and feedback to make more improvements.

“I've worked with Jennifer on and off at Parkinson's UK for over 10 years. She has been instrumental in helping us develop our information and support content during that time.

“She has written for our membership magazine, reviewed hugely important advice booklets, and redeveloped some of our most popular website landing pages.

“Jennifer transformed a messy set of money and benefits pages into a clear, easy-to-navigate experience, for the tens of thousands of people who rely on them.

“Jennifer always offers a constructive point of view, comes armed with useful suggestions, and leads with confidence in managing every project, always keeping the user's needs front and centre.

“I would highly recommend Jennifer to anyone wanting to bring on board a content specialist with huge amount of experience, and fantastic work ethic.”
